Together with Arne Blankerts, I will present a four-day tutorial at next month's DevWeek 2008 in Bangalore, India.

We will explore three aspects of modern PHP development: aspects of web application security (1 day), object-oriented programming with PHP 5.3 (2 days), and quality assurance in PHP projects (1 day).

Aspects of Web Application Security
Developing a web application in PHP is an easy enough task. But once deployed to a production server it is exposed to various types of attack 24 hours every day.

This workshop day will demonstrate typical security flaws in PHP-based applications and how to avoid them. After this day the terms XSS, CSRF, SQL- and header-injection will not only have a meaning to you - you will also know how to prevent them!

Object-Oriented Programming with PHP 5.3
Getting started with PHP usually means classical programming in procedural style. These two workshow days will bring you up to date on how to use modern object-oriented technology: introducing the concepts and design ideas behind OOP in PHP, providing samples to demonstrate potentials and problems along with a quick overview on design patterns available.

Quality Assurance in PHP Projects
Now that we know how to build applications that "just work", are fast and scalable, as well as secure, the next logical step is to implement processes and use techniques that help us assure that the software works correctly throughout the software's lifecycle.

This workshop day will introduce the attendees to writing unit tests for the backend and system tests for the frontend of a web application as well as managing the quality from development to deployment and maintainance using tools such as PHPUnit, Selenium RC, phpUnderControl, PHP_CodeSniffer, and PHP_Depend.

See you in Bangalore!
