Mertesacker jumped for a free kick, controlled the ball with his arm (didn't look intentional) then hooked a volley past Tzorvas. The too gentle giant was beaten to a cross by Mantzios, who at 6ft 3in is almost as imposing, his header dropping beyond Vander in the Bremen goal. Simao flicked on a corner, Karagounis bravely headed the ball down while taking a boot to the face and Ozil, standing just short of the goal-line, acrobatically backheeled the ball off the line while the Greeks appealed Mantzios jumped above Pasanen and sent a header looping over a packed centre circle and into the bottom corner. Brilliant. The Pana bench were celebrating as Mantzios was substituted for defender Rukavina. Nineteen seconds later Almeida wiped the collective smiles off their faces when he headed in the equaliser, wing back Boenisch with the cross.

Standing near the edge of the D Dani Alves looked to his extreme left and with the outside of his right foot chipped a fantastic ball over the Basel defence, Messi ran in on the blindside and passed a volley into the net. Xavi found Busquets free on the right of the box with a sumptuous crossfield pass and the youngster (20) took his chance well to score his first Champions League goal. Bojan made it 3-0 with a low drive from the edge of the box. Busquets, who seems to have a touch of the Guardiola about him, sent Bojan clear on the break for Barca's fourth and Xavi finished the rout with a grasscutter. Henry got a run out as a second half sub. How the mighty have fallen. Next stop MLS.



Apparently Busquets' Barca contract expires at the end of the season. If the name is familiar he's the son of former Barca reserve goalkeeper Carles Busquets.

Pongolle intercepted a Xavi Alonso through ball but a heavy touch allowed Alonso to reclaim possession, he gave it to Gerrard and he rolled it between the centre backs to Keane who ran clear to score amid appeals for offside. Liverpool were surprisingly caught out by a longball over the top. Carragher lacked the pace to beat Forlan to the bounce and the Uruguayan took the ball down brilliantly, checked outside Carragher and Arbeloa then centred for long-term Liverpool target Simao to equalise.
